The past two weekends have been very social, with two opportunities to catch up outside of rehearsals, and two fabulous days of coaching!
Our first get-together was at the Powerhouse, where we met past Assistant Director, Jess. Jess moved to the UK last year and we loved seeing her back in Brisbane for a visit. It was a stunner of a day to spend by the river, and as a bonus, bari Shaz’s steel pan band (River City Steel) was performing in New Farm Park around the same time!
Then last weekend, we had two fabulous days of coaching with Avril Hughes. Avril is an accomplished musician, lead of Australian champion quartet Skylark, and a member of the Sweet Adelines Australia Regional Education Faculty. Avril is one of our favourite coaches, having travelled from Canberra to work with us on several occasions.
On Saturday, Avril helped us fine-tune our contest set and amp up our storytelling in both songs. It’s amazing how much impact a few small changes can make! Check out some memories from the day in our reel on Instagram. This session was also a great opportunity to try out our costumes for convention, se
e how comfortable they are to perform in, and make any adjustments needed before our trip to Hobart.
On Sunday, we had another coaching session with Avril and our friends at The Brisbane River City Clippers. On 1 November, the Clippers are hosting a show and we’re very excited to be guests! We’ll be performing an epic six-part song with the Clippers, as well as our own songs, and some of our members will also feature in small groups and as characters in the story. You won’t want to miss this event – the Clippers shows are always creative, funny and very entertaining.
Avril has previously performed the six-part song that we are learning with the Clippers, so the weekend was the perfect opportunity to get some feedback from her and work out some creative staging/movement for the piece. There's a reel of pics/videos from this session too - check it out here on Instagram!
After coaching, a few of us headed to Finnigan’s Chin at Keperra for lunch and to see ex-member Suzi perform with her band, Occasionally Jazz. It was a lovely afternoon to finish off a fun weekend of music!
